Comedian-cum-composer-cum-lyricist Tim Minchin has joined forces with Matthew Warchus (Director), Peter Darling (Choreographer) and Rob Howell (Designer) to bring the 1993 cult classic Groundhog Day film to the stage. The story follows the tale of Phil Connors (Andy Karl), a disillusioned TV weatherman based in Pittsburgh who is sent away on his first news piece to cover the Groundhog Day celebrations.
He arrives in a one-horse town in Pennsylvania. Unimpressed by the parochial residents and bored with his surroundings, Connors finally concludes his tiresome first day and goes to bed, only to wake up and re-live exactly the same day once more. From that point on Connors is stuck in a time loop, endlessly playing out the same day over and over again.
Minchin is definitely one of the lures of the show, his comic timing and exuberant piano skills have already been put to the Broadway test with Josephs Technicolour Dreamcoat, which won him plenty of praise. It would appear that he is enjoying sharing the stage too, this isn’t the first time this creative quartet have been in cahoots; they are also responsible for creating international sensation Matilda The Musical. Currently at the peak of their game then, this time they are arguably setting their ambitions even higher, by picking one of the most treasured films of the 90’s.
