TURNSPIT PRODUCTIONS
I was recently chosen for an immersive film-making placement with Turnspit Productions exploring the possibilities of virtual production for film.
Over the course of this time, I was working on Organ Bros, an animated series set in a post pandemic future where healthy organs are the new currency, two cyborg transplant surgeons struggle to keep their fledgling startup alive. During this time I explored the mode of production on this piece, which uses the Unreal game engine to project virtual backgrounds on a set instead of a green screen and combines CG, motion capture, and real-time rendering with traditional film making techniques.
Directors such as George Lucas (Star Wars: Episode I), Steven Spielberg (A.I.), Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings), Robert Zemeckis (The Polar Express) and James Cameron (Avatar) have already embraced virtual production enhanced by real-time rendering. I was lucky enough to see some of the Avatar production when I was invited to WETA DIGITAL studio’s last year.
Virtual production is poised to be one of the biggest technology disruptors of the visual medium. It’s fast becoming an integral part of film, video, and broadcast pipelines, unlocking new doors for innovators seeking to carve out their foothold in the competitive visual space.
